If you’ve tried to take hair platinum blonde at home and ended up yellow, patchy, or over‑toned grey, you’re not alone.
True white platinum is one of the hardest shades to achieve because it demands two things most people (and that includes hairdressers!) compromise on:
1. Lifting the hair all the way to a true level 10 – not stopping at “close enough”.
2. Coloring (not just toning) with the right violet‑based pigments to eliminate every trace of yellow and leave a rich, bright platinum result.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to do both using:
- Brilliant Blondexx Bleach
- 20 Vol and 30 Vol Premium Developer with Bond Protect
- 10.2 Extra Light Platinum Cool Blonde
Why Platinum Blonde Goes Yellow
Yellow platinum usually comes down to one or both of these issues:
- The hair was never lifted high enough. If you stop at level 8–9, there will still be a lot of underlying yellow and orange. No toner in the world can completely remove that.
- Only a light toner was used, when you actually needed a true blonding color with strong violet pigments to overpower residual warmth.
If your goal is that clean, white, icy platinum, you must first commit to getting the hair to a pale, level 10 base – and then use a color that adds cool pigment, not just “softly neutralizes” what’s there.
That is what many hair stylists get wrong. They're too scared to bleach all the way. Or they just never learned.
Lift All the Way to Level 10
For a real platinum transformation at home, bleaching is non‑negotiable. For this, you need a very good quality bleach.
We often see customers tell us that they tried to bleach to level 10 but just couldn't. Reason: their bleach wasn't up to it.
This is where Brilliant Blondexx Bleach comes in. Not only does it lift 7 levels efficiently and fast, in a controlled way.
It also contains maleic acid. Bond Protect, in other words. Which means that your hair is protected through the lifting phase.
Choose The Appropriate Developer Strength
Choosing the right developer strength is key. Choose a developer which has the right amount of lift, neither less nor more.
Choose a developer strength which is too weak and you just won't succeed getting that platinum blonde look that yoy are looking for.
Choose a developer strength which is too strong and you will blow up the hair structure unnecessarily.
Once again, we suggest you use Ugly Duckling Premium developers with Bond Protect. They will give you both lift and hair protection.
When to Use 20 Vol Developer
Use 20 Vol Premium Developer with Bond Protect for lifts of up to 3 levels with your bleach.
This is generally enough for most medium blonde hair or hair that has been previously lightened.
20 Vol is also the recommended developer to use on the root.
The heat from the scalp plus the fact that new growth is virgin hair makes it easier to lift, so 20 Vol is good.
When to Use 30 Vol Developer
Use 30 Vol developer when you need 3 or more levels of lift.
Mixing and Application Tips For Your Bleach

Prepare your hair as you see above.
If the lengths are already blonde, as you see above, then just apply the bleach to the dark (new growth area).
The right mix ratio is 1 part Brilliant Blondexx Bleach to 2 parts Premium Developer.
Be generous with product: saturation is essential to get an even, high lift.
On longer hair, apply first to the mid‑lengths and ends, avoiding the roots.
Let the hair process and lift it all the way to level 10. That means very very pale yellow.
See picture below.
Rinse when lifted, dry the hair if needed.
Then make a fresh mix and do the roots.
This technique will give you more time to get it right and more control
When to Rinse

Lift until the hair looks like this.
Don’t watch the clock – watch the level.
You are ready to rinse when the hair is:
Very, very pale yellow, as close as possible to the inside of a banana peel
If you’re still seeing orange or strong yellow, you’re not at level 10 yet.
Rinsing too early is one of the main reasons hair never reaches true white platinum.
Doing a Second Bleach Application
Have a good look at the hair. As a stylist looking to get your client's hair to platinum blonde, you really need to check.
If it's not truly level 10. give it a second bleach.
This time use just 20 Vol. That will be enough for a second application.
Which may go very quick. Maybe just another 10 minutes.
You may like to mix in some purple shampoo into the bleach mixture when you do this.
That's a pro technique that wrks very well.
Use Brilliant Blonde Purple Shampoo for that.
Step 3: Color, Don’t Just Tone – Use 10.2 Extra Light Platinum Cool Blonde
Once you’ve reached a clean level 10, you might be tempted to grab a “soft” toner.
For a rich, dense white platinum, it’s better to go a step further and use 10.2 Extra Light Platinum Cool Blonde.
Why 10.2?
10.2 is not just a toner – it’s a high‑level, violet‑enriched blonde color that:
- Adds cool pigment back into the hair
- Neutralizes any remaining pale yellow
- Creates a vivid, three‑dimensional platinum result, not a flat, dull grey
How to Use 10.2 with Premium Developer
- Mix 10.2 Extra Light Platinum Cool Blonde with 20 Vol Premium Developer with Bond Protect
- Set the mix ratio at 1 part color to 1 part developer.
- You will get richer, more vibrant color results that way.
- Apply quickly and evenly from roots to ends on your freshly lifted level 10 hair.
- Once again, watch the color visually: once you see the purple pigments arriving on the hair and the yellow is all gone, you can rinse.
- 15 minutes of processing should be about enough in most cases, but use your eyes, not the clock.
How Do You Keep Your Platinum from Sliding Back to Yellow
Even a perfect platinum can turn warm over time due to hard water, heat styling, the use of cheap shampoos and of course the effect of sunlight.
To maintain your client's result, always use sulfate‑free, color‑safe shampoos and conditioners. We recommend Brilliant Blondexx Shampoo and Mask.
Once or twice a week, incorporate a purple or violet‑based maintenance product (shampoo or mask) to keep yellow at bay. We recommend Brilliant Blonde Purple Shampoo and Masque.
Also, avoid frequent high‑heat styling, and wash in tepid water rather than hot.
Do the above and you should be able to succeed in getting and keeping beautiful platinum blonde hair.
