Stylists often face this challenge: a client with dark blonde or light brown virgin hair wants a bright, clean blonde—but they’re nervous about bleach.
You want lift and clarity without compromising the hair’s condition.
This is exactly where high lift color becomes a smart, professional alternative.
Understanding High Lift Color
High lift color is a specialized permanent color designed to both lighten and tone in one step.
It contains more ammonia and is mixed with a higher-volume developer (usually 30 or 40 Vol.), allowing it to lift natural pigment up to 4 levels while controlling for unwanted warmth at the same time.
Unlike bleach, which removes pigment entirely, high lift color gently lightens while leaving the hair’s internal structure more intact.
This makes it ideal when the goal is a natural blonde result with improved shine and softness.
When to Choose High Lift Over Bleach
Use a high lift instead of bleach when:
- You’re working on natural, virgin hair at levels 6–8 (dark blonde to light brown).
- The desired shade is a bright, natural blonde, not platinum.
- The client wants to minimize dryness or breakage.
Use bleach instead when:
- The natural level is darker than a 6.
- You’re lifting previously colored hair.
- The target shade is a very light blonde, or ultra cool platinum blonde, silver blonde etc or any color that requires more than 4 levels of lift.
Ugly Duckling’s Two High Lift Options
Ugly Duckling offers two professional high lift color formulas, each engineered for precision and control on different base levels.
High Lift for Light Blonde Hair (Level 8–9):
When you have hair at level 8-9, use High Lift Deep Ash Blonde 100.11
This is a product made for lifting hair blonde and double ash blonde toning when the hair is fairly blonde already and you need to take it blonder.
This product is perfect for natural blondes who want to refresh or brighten their tone.
It will retone as it lifts and add dimension, and delivers a cleaner, cooler blonde.
This solves the problems of hair that is medium blonde and too yellow.

High Lift for Brunette or Dark Blonde Hair (Level 6–7):
When you have darker hair, for example dark blonde or brunette level 6, then we would recommend that you go for High Lift Ash Blonde 100.10
This is made with stronger lifting power to handle deeper natural bases.
It lifts warm pigments efficiently while maintaining the underlying integrity and shine.
It solves the problem that clients with darker blonde or light brown hair face, with hair that often ends up too brassy with regular color.
This high lift gets your hair to a higher level - not necessarily level 9 blonde but a very nice medium blonde without extra toning or bleach.
It is a product which is often used in salons for balayage and foil applications to create blonde highlights on dark hair.
But it can also be used for full head applications as you can see below:

Results You Can Expect
When used correctly with the recommended developer, both Ugly Duckling high lift colors deliver:
- Blonder hair without bleach: up to 4 levels of lift on virgin hair
- Well controlled tone, even when the hair was too warm to start off with
- Better condition and shine than a traditional bleach-and-tone process
Stylists report noticeably softer, glossier results and a more even lift from roots to ends- especially valuable for clients lifting within natural blonde ranges.
What if the Client has a a Lot of Grey Hair? Can I use High Lift Color?
If the client has a lot of grey hair and you want to take it more blonde you can still use high lift color.
Our recommendation would however be to combine that with some blonde base.
Color Gel 10N would make an excellent choice in that case.
Just mix Color Gel 10N with your chosen high lift color (either 100.10 or 100.11) and you will get both high lift color and grey hair coverage at the same time.
When Not to Use High Lift Color
If the hair has already been colored and especially colored down, it may not receive the high lift as well.
In such cases, a bleach would be better before coloring. You will get more lift that way.
The Smart Solution for Controlled Blonding Without Bleach
For controlled blonding on natural levels 6–9, high lift color offers the perfect balance of lightening power, tone control, and hair preservation.
By choosing the right Ugly Duckling formula for your client, you can get great lift and professional-grade blonde results.
Without the unnecessary use of bleach.
